Using Abelson Reports – Ideal Environment Page

By: Dr. Michael Abelson

The Ideal Environment page appears in every DISC report.  It may be at different locations within the report, but it is in every DISC report. When would you use the Ideal Environment page?

In hiring, onboarding, coaching, managing/leading and/or retaining.  The page gives bulleted items that describe the ideal environment or correct culture for the person taking the assessment.  It is one of the most crucial pages in the report.  If someone’s goals and needs are not a good fit with the environment for which they are to work, they will be less engaged, less motivated, less satisfied, and in most cases perform less effectively, and will eventually either totally disengage or leave the job.

How do you use this page?  It’s very easy.  It is a page with a brief explanatory paragraph at the top and bulleted items that clearly describe the type of environment which is the best fit for the person taking the report.  To make the report totally accurate and useful, just ask the person to do two things.  First, circle the bullet or check mark that appeared to the very left of all those bulleted items they believe are true about themselves.  Second, ask them to put an asterisk, or other mark, to the left of the 3 or 4 bulleted comments that are the most important for them.

The next step is up to you.  Discuss those things that are most important to them and whether or not, those things exist in the environment related to why they took the assessment.  Managers/leaders, how close is their ideal environment to the actual environment of the job.  As a coach, how can you help your client best deal with the environment they are currently experiencing.  As a job interviewer, how close is the candidate’s ideal environment to the job for which the candidate is applying?  Manager, coach, interviewer, have a realistic conversation about that fit.  If it is not a good fit, it is just a matter of time before the new job candidate is disengaged and/or leaves and you have to start the hiring process all over again.   After exploring the ideal environment page, you can decide appropriate next steps for person who took the assessment.
