Using Graphs to Master Understanding, Connecting, & Motivating

By: Dr. Michael Abelson

Hiring staff? How do you know the candidate has the right behaviors?

Coaches, want to better connect, motivate, & manage your clients?

Managers and leaders, want to know where staff will excel?

Understanding graphs will help you do all of the above & so much more!!!

The Case of BB

We call BB a Relater.  She is intense on I and S, both people-oriented behavior sets and much less intense with D and C, both task related behavior sets.  She is so low on “D” that expecting her to take command of any activity is very unlikely.  She is a relater first and a doing second.   Assigning her to people related activities will work best.  She is also not a very good “closer.”  She is more a pleaser.

More specifically, we would describe her DISC profile as:

D = agreeable, hesitant, cooperative, & cautious

I = trusting, optimistic, poised, & convincing

S = stable, steady, & consistent

C = firm, self-willed, & independent

When you communicate with her, do this:

  • Build in time for relating and socializing
  • Talk about Becky’s goals and opinions
  • Don’t talk down to her or over control the conversation

To better manage her do this…

  • Challenge her knowledge in a friendly, not confrontational manner
  • Don’t over control the conversation; let her talk by asking questions
  • Be sensitive to her feeling and how she reacts regarding her feelings

B, like everyone else, can be exceptional and excel if asked to do behaviors that come easily to her.  Attend our DISC & Motivators Certification to learn how to read and use graphs and so much more.

Why Smart Teams Use DISC & Motivators to Perform at a Higher Level

Over the last 45+ years working with leaders and organizations across the globe, I’ve seen a common thread in underperforming teams: they have the skills, the experience, and even the ambition—but they don’t understand each other. Great teams aren’t just built on...
